Disney continues in its remake era and it seems that they will not stop until they exhaust all their classics. A few days ago we announced that they had already found the actress for Lilo in the remake coming to Disney Plus, and a little while ago we were in front of the trailers for The Little Mermaid and Peter Pan & Wendy. But today we are talking about a new remake: Vaiana.
The 2016 film was one of the company’s biggest hits in recent years, grossing $643 million. Therefore, it was only a matter of time before they gave the green light to its remake, and this has come barely seven years after its premiere. What’s more, a member of the original cast has done it: Dwayne Johnson.
A very personal project for Dwayne Johnson
Through a video recorded in Hawaii, the Black Adam actor announced the project and explained that he will return to the role of Maui, whom he voiced in the original film. He will do so by honoring the spirit of his grandfather, on whom they relied heavily to bring the character to life. It is a project, despite what it seems, very personal for the interpreter.
It’s not quite clear how they will handle the physical issue, as Johnson doesn’t really look too much like the demigod in the film, but it certainly looks like they are willing to do the best job they can. There is still no one else announced in the cast, nor is it known when filming will begin, but we will most likely have news on that soon.
Vaiana tells the story of a young sea enthusiast and the only daughter of a sailor chief. When the sailors in her village cannot catch any fish and all crops fail, Vaiana discovers that the demigod Maui caused the misfortune after stealing the heart of the goddess Te Fiti. The only way to save the fate of the island is to persuade Maui to return Te Fiti’s heart. Vaiana sets out on a daring adventure to save her village with Maui.
