ea logoElectronic Arts is discontinuing the Facebook games The Sims Social, SimCity Social, and Pet Society. This comes as a surprise as SimCity Social isn’t even a year old, launching in June of 2012. According to EA, the games will all be discontinued on June 14th, 2013.

This news comes after massive layoffs at social game company, Zynga. Investment for Zynga’s social games fell a staggering 94% in 2012 and now the company is hedging its bets on gambling games to keep afloat.

In an official statement, EA stated that interest in the games have fallen steeply, leading to the decision to discontinue these games.

“After millions of people initially logged in to play these games, the number of players and amount of activity has fallen off. For people who have seen other recent shutdowns of social games, perhaps this is not surprising.”

It certainly doesn’t look good for social gaming as a whole, but EA has stated it will continue development for its other social games like Bejeweled Blitz and Zuma Blitz. Still, this move by EA has upset many Sims fans who have invested a lot of real money into the game. Here are some quotes from angered SimCity Social players on Facebook:

Thies Wandschneider writes:

“This is the confirmation that EA is the worst company in the U.S..”

John A Landin writes:

“Not happy. I’ve spent a lot on this game and I just bought diamond vaults in the past 2 weeks and I’ve really enjoyed planning out my town. I spent money thinking that this would be of value to me.

I will not be playing any of your other games if these are the kinds of stunts you pull. I’d like my money back.”

Is this news the end of social gaming as a whole? Let us know what you think in the comments.
