El precio de la red unveils a new trailer: Mark Zuckerberg is pitch-perfect, the rest? We’ll see

The Social Network sequel, El precio de la red, has a new trailer out, and the timing couldn’t be better. Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg is boxed in right now, and he’s become the exact kind of figure he once swore he’d never turn into: an oligarch almost everyone seems to hate who, at least in the collective imagination, is still hammering F5.

Then again, Aaron Sorkin isn’t David Fincher, and Jeremy Strong isn’t Jesse Eisenberg. And if the second trailer for El precio de la red makes anything clear, it’s mostly that there’s still a lot it’s not showing.

The script is almost certainly going to be great, because it’s Aaron Sorkin and nobody really expects a weak screenplay from him. The bigger question is how people will react when they walk in expecting a straight sequel to The Social Network and instead get a journalist character played by Jeremy Allen White, plus former Facebook whistleblower Frances Haugen (played by Mikey Madison), there to drag Meta’s mess into the light.

There should be more stories about social media. There just should. Few things have shaped the 21st century more, for good sometimes, but mostly for the worse. Political radicalization, deranged algorithms, screen time completely out of control… And absolutely nobody ever footing the bill.

Facebook can feel like a dead social network, and in some ways it is. Instagram doesn’t look that far behind, either. Still, Facebook and Instagram continue to bring in billions for Meta every year (according to the company’s own earnings reports).

And in Spain, for the record, the movie will be released as El precio de la red. It opens on October 9, the same day it does in the United States.

Are we looking at another modest hit like the first movie, or has the audience already moved on? We won’t have to wait long to find out. Assuming Zuck doesn’t take it personally first.
