There is a big mess (and rightly so) related to a $400 million contract from the U.S. government for the acquisition of armored electric vehicles, known as “Armored Teslas”.
Initially, this amount was included in the State Department’s budget projections for 2025 after the elections, only to be removed shortly thereafter amid clarifications regarding the status of the project.
According to reports, discussions about the possibility of developing armored electric vehicles began under the Biden administration, with a budget that barely reached $500,000 for research.
Is Trump giving 400 million to his friend Musk?
However, the figure of $400 million generated confusion and suspicion, since there were no funds allocated for the purchase of armored Tesla vehicles, and it was claimed that the initial goal was to acquire lightweight electric vehicles.
A former State Department official suggested that the budget interference may not have been an administrative error, implying that there could be irregularities in the management of the proposal. “I don’t think this is a mistake. Probably, someone new in the Department decided: ‘Okay, we’ll do this with Tesla,'” commented the source, who was not authorized to speak publicly on the matter, thus revealing a lack of transparency in the process.
Regarding the doubts about the increase of the contract from less than half a million to $400 million, a spokesperson for the State Department clarified that this latter figure was only an “estimate” and added that, at this time, the project is still in preliminary phases, emphasizing that there are no plans to move forward with the request for proposals.
The situation raises concerns about the management of public funds and leaves open the question of how such a disparate budget was developed in a context where clarity is crucial for public trust.
