It has been almost a decade since the release of Interestellar, one of Christopher Nolan‘s most acclaimed films and one of the most successful science fiction films of recent years. The film, starring Matthew McConaughey, follows a group of astronauts who, in search of a new home for humanity, travel through a wormhole in space.
The film was well received by critics and audiences alike, becoming a huge hit upon its release, but its ending left many viewers baffled. Now, Christopher Nolan has given us some statements that seek to give a little more context to that ending, although his conclusion is clear: the interpretation depends on the audience.

What is the message at the end of Interestellar?
In a surprising twist at the end of the film, Matthew McConaughey’s character, Cooper, finds himself trapped inside a black hole and ends up in a space where time is treated as just another physical dimension, and he can interact with it in a different way than we are used to. There, Cooper communicates with his daughter through a kind of library that allows him to send messages to the past, which eventually allows humanity to find a new home.
This ending was truly emotional. But, after a science fiction epic based on real science, it left a sense of bewilderment in many viewers. Over the years, many interpretations arose about it. Some viewers interpreted this scene as a representation of the scientific theory of the multiverse, where parallel universes and infinite possibilities exist. Others suggested that McConaughey’s character has died on his mission and is experiencing a kind of limbo before passing to the other side.

Now, in an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Christopher Nolan has explained that the ending of Interestellar is meant to be interpreted in different ways:
“The intention was to make a film that was very entertaining, but also had a certain emotional and intellectual complexity. And an important part of that is not giving all the answers to the viewer, leaving some things open to interpretation.”
According to the director, the ending of the film is open to interpretation because he wanted viewers to be left with a sense of wonder and mystery after watching it. Nolan wanted the ending to be something that viewers would have to ponder and discuss, rather than simply accept.

Nolan also took the opportunity to explain some of the film’s decisions such as the motivation of Mann’s (Matt Damon) character in the film, which also suggested some doubts among the audience. However, it has been his ending that has drawn the most attention from his statements, and as much as we want a firm answer, it seems that we will never get it.
Still, what seems to be clear is that the ending of Interstellar has a lot to do with the importance of love and human connection. Cooper’s character, who throughout the film prioritizes his mission to his family and his life on Earth, communicates with his daughter across time and space to save humanity, suggesting that love and connection are fundamental to our survival and evolution.
Ultimately, the ending of Interstellar is an invitation to reflect on humanity’s role in the universe and the importance of our connection to time, space and each other. Although it may be difficult to understand, its complexity and mystery are precisely what make it so memorable and impactful for many viewers.
