google iconEarlier today at Google’s Big Tent summit, Eric Schmidt implied that Google Now for iOS was stuck in Apple’s App Store approval process after acknowledging its existence. This was after he lauded Apple as a “tremendous technology innovator.”

Google accidentally leaked a promotional video for Google Now on iOS last week, detailing its features and integration with the Google Search app for iOS. While Google Now is a feature that differentiates Android from its competitors, it also helps strengthen Google’s ecosystem on other platforms. Naturally Google would want to bring Google Now to other platforms, including iOS.

Schmidt dances lightly around the topic of Google for iOS, saying, “Apple has a policy of approving or disapproving apps that are submitted into its store, and some of the apps we make they approve and some of them they don’t.” Apple is notorious for blocking apps that “duplicate functionality” from its App Store such as third party email apps. Google Now may duplicate some functionality with Siri but is an entirely different type of voice assistant.

A representative from Apple then responded to The Verge and stated that there wasn’t a single Google app waiting for approval in the App Store. So who is telling the truth? Is there really a Google Now for iOS app or is Schmidt getting ahead of himself?
