Warner Bros. Discovery has decided to change its streaming television product in one fell swoop. The company’s platform, HBO Max, will undergo a total transformation that will lead to a change of logo, name, prices, etc.
Warner Bros. Discovery wants to become the new Netflix or, at least, wants to attract as many customers as the American giant. And to do so, they have thought it is time to reinvent themselves.
While in 2021 Warner’s streaming platform changed from HBO to HBO Max, with more content, better quality and a total remodeling of the app. Now, in 2023 they announce a change that will take effect next month.
Warner announces Max, the replacement for HBO Max
Warner Bros. Discovery last night unveiled Max, its enhanced streaming service, which will launch in the United States on May 23, 2023. In just one month.
Max will be home to HBO original content, Warner Bros. movies, Max originals, the DC Universe, the Harry Potter Universe, a wide range of kids’ content and programming from channels such as HGTV, Food Network, Discovery Channel, TLC, ID and more.
Max aims to conquer the market by combining a wide variety of content along with iconic franchises and solid product expertise… all at a new, much higher price point.
In Europe this service will not arrive until 2024, so all of you who have the year of HBO Max paid for can rest assured. Mind you, there are a lot of questions to be answered.
New HBO pricing and new rates for different users
That streaming platforms were going to raise prices was something we all knew. While Netflix was the first and therefore took all the public’s criticism, the rest of the companies had been giving clues in recent years that charging 5 euros for a subscription was not profitable for them.
Warner Bros. Discovery has announced that with the arrival of Max, the streaming service will have three subscription rates. From the cheapest to the most expensive. The price is in dollars and we will have to see how it converts to euros when it arrives in Europe:
- Max Ad Lite | $9.99/month or $99.99/year: 2 simultaneous streams, 1,080p resolution, no offline downloads, 5.1 surround sound quality.
- Max Ad Free | $15.99/month or $149.99/year: 2 simultaneous streams, 1,080p resolution, 30 offline downloads, 5.1 surround sound quality.
- Max Ultimate Ad Free | $19.99/month or $199.99/year: 4 simultaneous streams, up to 4K UHD resolution, 100 offline downloads, Dolby Atmos sound quality.
So far, HBO Max only offers a monthly and an annual subscription. The first is €8.99 per month and the second is €69.99 per year (€5.83 per month). This gives access to several accounts at once and to watch series in 1080p and movies in 4K.
This adjusted price, with the good content of HBO Max and the broadcast quality of the platform (except for some complaints with Game of Thrones and its chapters with low brightness) has achieved that the platform now has about 100 million users.
They say in the press release that existing HBO Max subscribers will have access to Max at the same price as their HBO Max subscription and can visit this website for more information. In addition, HBO Max subscribers will continue to have access to the features of their current plan for a minimum of six months after the launch of Max.
New series announced to win over HBO customers
One of Warner Bros. Discovery’s promises is that an average of 40 titles will be released per month. This will include new series, new seasons, movies, documentaries, cooking shows, etc.
And, since it’s the household names that attract customers, Warner has given us what we’ve been wanting so badly: a Harry Potter series, a comedy spin-off series from The Big Bang Theory, an HBO original prequel to Game of Thrones titled “Knight of the Seven Kingdoms: The Knight Errant.”
And it doesn’t end there, we will also have a drama series based on the Warren Files films; a Rick and Morty anime called “The Anime from Adult Swim”, an original series of The Penguin, starring Colin Farrell; a fourth season of True Detective: Night Country, starring Jodie Foster, etc.
And we stop counting, because there is a lot of work to do and today we have come to announce the big change: HBO Max will be renamed Max. This change brings new features in logo, application, content and pricing. We’ll see how customers receive it.
