Friday’s air-quality forecast had East Rutherford at a moderate AQI of 63. Even so, conditions around New York and New Jersey have been changing fast over the past few days, at times jumping into the Unhealthy for Everyone and Very Unhealthy ranges.

That uncertainty stands out more because experts say smoke can cause eye and throat irritation, coughing, chest pain, fatigue, lung inflammation, and weaker endurance, decision-making, and reaction time during heavy exercise.
