Fall is Apple’s season. Rumors during the summer and releases in September and October. We await the new iPhone 15, of which rumors already confirm the launch date, new Apple Watches, and also, later on, the arrival of new Macs. These Macs will come with Apple silicon M3 chips inside. Mark Gurman, in the latest edition of the Power On newsletter for Bloomberg, provides us with more details.

Up to 6 new Macs, and several coming this fall

Renowned journalist Mark Gurman reports that Apple is testing a new Mac model identified as “Mac15,12,” which could potentially be a new version of the Mac mini featuring the M3 chip. This testing version boasts an 8-core CPU, combining four efficiency cores with four high-performance cores, alongside a 10-core GPU and 24GB of RAM. While this configuration resembles that of the Mac mini with the M2 chip, the M3 variant promises to take a performance leap forward.

Gurman suggests that while the base specifications of the M3 chip are identical to those of the M2, with the addition of expanded RAM, moving up to the M3 Pro would bring notable improvements. The base version of the M3 Pro is expected to feature a 12-core CPU and an 18-core GPU, surpassing the 10-core CPU and 16-core GPU of the M2 Pro.

Gurman’s report details that up to six variations of new Macs with the M3 chip have been registered in developer logs obtained by Bloomberg. These include new versions of the 13-inch and 15-inch MacBook Air, the 13-inch MacBook Pro, the iMac, and possibly the Mac mini. Additionally, there could be a 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pro featuring the M3 Pro and M3 Max chips.

One of the standout features of the new M3 chip is its 3nm manufacturing process. This reduction in manufacturing process size results in smaller distances between transistors on the chip, leading to improved performance and efficiency. In practical terms, we can expect faster, more efficient devices with better battery life.

Which of these Macs will we see this fall? Gurman has already mentioned that the first Macs with M3 chips will arrive in October. It is expected that the initial lineup will include the 13-inch MacBook Pro, the 24-inch iMac, and the 13-inch MacBook Air. It remains to be seen if the Mac mini with M3 will also be introduced on that date. In any case, it’s clear that we can expect some exciting updates in the world of Mac.
