Bird Box Barcelona is the latest Spanish sensation on Netflix. The streaming platform has released this film as a mix between a sequel and spin-off of the original 2018 movie, and it has been a huge success worldwide. However, the film has left us with an ending that raises many doubts and questions, so let’s try to unravel it.
An ending that gives rise to much more
Bird Box Barcelona revolves around a world where a race of alien beings forces people to commit suicide when they look directly at them. In the original film, we witnessed the consequences this could have, but in the Barcelona version, the concept goes even further, guided by its protagonist Sebastián (Mario Casas).
Sebastián is what is known in the world of Bird Box as a “seer.” Seers are individuals to whom the creatures speak and persuade them to compel others to commit suicide. Essentially, the creatures convince them that they are some kind of angels who have come to liberate humanity, and in order to do so, they must help others “see the light.”
After the forced suicide of his daughter, Sebastián becomes a seer, and the creatures tell him that he can reunite with her by helping others “see the light.” In this way, he becomes a puppet of these beings in a disturbing and dark journey.

But the film takes a twist towards the end. Sebastián realizes that he must take a different path and stays behind to confront the villain, the Priest (Leonardo Sbaraglia), and his own seers. While doing so, he buys time for his companions to escape and ultimately sacrifices himself.
However, the story doesn’t end there. After Sebastián’s death, it is revealed that one of the creatures has been captured, opening the door for a possible sequel that we may see in the near future. We don’t know if Netflix will decide to make another film in this universe, but there is certainly much more to be told because the film doesn’t fully resolve what it’s really about.
