Square Enix and Tencent have terminated the licensing agreement associated with Final Fantasy XIV Mobile. This results in the cancellation of the title and, by extension, everything tied to it. Although both companies say the decision was amicable, this means that the servers in China will be shut down and the game’s planned worldwide launch is canceled.
A game that hasn’t taken off
Final Fantasy XIV Mobile came about after a strategic partnership the two companies signed in 2018, confirming the development of the mobile version of the popular MMORPG in November 2024. Developed by LightSpeed Studios, a Tencent in-house studio that has worked on titles like PUBG Mobile, it launched in China in June 2025 with plans for a global launch later on.
The Chinese servers will shut down on September 30, 2026, and as of today, players can no longer buy in-game currency or register new accounts. While neither Square Enix nor Tencent have clarified the reason behind the decision to cancel the title, citing a vague “business adjustments and market changes”, it seems that the game’s fans will have to continue their adventures in Eorzea, as they always have, on PC, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and Nintendo Switch 2.
