PlayStation had a new State of Play to show, this time, material of a game that arrives exclusively on PlayStation 5 in about two months. We are indeed talking about Final Fantasy XVI, Square Enix’s next big production.

The 25-minute gameplay is full of information, each one more relevant than the last. However, we want to stay with 5 details that may perhaps go unnoticed among so many combo and effect on screen.

An open non-world

Let’s go by parts. Yoshida, producer of the game, already said that Final Fantasy XVI would not have an open world, but that it was not going to be linear either. Therefore, we had that doubt to know how the game’s universe was planned. Thanks to this new video, we have been able to clear up our doubts, and the solution is none other than what we have seen in God of War with the kingdoms.

We will have a world map where locations are added and updated with progress. From there, the player will be able to open the map at any time, press “X” on the location itself and it will go there. It’s that easy.

Each of these locations will have their own open areas, but they will not be interconnected with other parts of the world. As we say, the format is similar to that experienced in God of War, where Kratos and Atreus choose which realm they go to, and then each realm has its own environment. It is not an Elden Ring or Assassin’s Creed, where the areas are linked: here they will be unique scenarios and you will have to use the map to travel to others.

Accessibility as a flag

This point has gone rather unnoticed and we think it’s a shame: Final Fantasy XVI will have great accessibility options. By equipping different items, the game will be made more “accessible” for those players who might find complications in this new fast-paced and frenetic combat system.

For example, players will be able to configure options such as whether dodges are automatic, whether they appear with a button, whether there is no on-screen indicator, and so on. In short, the player will be able to establish which gameplay mode is the best for him. It is not to make it easier, but to give tools to each user so that the combat is oriented to him. In fact, there will even be a “story mode” for those who just want to enjoy the adventure.

The main base

Stay well with this name: The Hideout. This is the name of the place where Clive, our character, will have his particular base of operations, which is located in a kind of ruined place. It is already known that in Final Fantasy titles there is usually a flying boat or similar, but now it is directly committed to the classic, for that place on the world map from where we can face our missions.

As a curiosity, we will not only be able to buy weapons or manage everything around us, but we will also be able to discover more about the world thanks to the historian Harpocrates.

Training mode

Final Fantasy XVI will have a “training mode“. It is not something new in the saga, but here it will be given greater importance. We will be able to access it, precisely, from The Hideout that we mentioned before. The name it receives is “Piedra Arete” and will serve, effectively, so that players can test combos and skills. It looks like we are going to spend a lot of time in this area.

All to AI

There were many doubts about whether in Final Fantasy XVI we would have other battle companions; or rather, whether they could be managed by the player. There will be other characters that will fight alongside us, indeed, although these will be controlled by the game’s artificial intelligence. According to the studio, the actions of these characters will be predetermined by our behavior in battle: if we need health, they will cover us; if we seek to attack, they will do so.

However, at all times we will be accompanied by our wolf-dog, who does have action mapping. In this way, our dog (called Torgal) will also be directed by the AI, but we will be able to give him orders so that he orients himself to our style of play.
