It’s always fun to see how far technology has advanced when we look back at the past. Today we have totally internalized the idea of putting our finger on the iPhone and the smartphone recognizing our fingerprint. But how long has it been with us?

Although it may seem that it is a relatively new feature, the reality is that this year it will be no less than a decade among us. To be exact, Touch ID arrived with the iPhone 5S. Its introduction took place underneath the home button, which was replaced by a beautiful sapphire crystal with a stainless steel ring. Under this was the detector in question that was able to recognize our fingerprint to unlock the cell phone or perform other actions.

To be exact, the first Touch ID on the iPhone 5 was composed of four layers: a first one that had the aforementioned laser-cut sapphire glass; a second that was the stainless steel sensing ring; a third that was a one-touch capacitive sensor; and a final one that was a touch button. All layers were meticulously overlapped to take advantage of Touch ID for the first time in Apple’s history.

The apple company introduced along with Touch ID a number of features that are already known to all. For example, the position of the finger has no influence at all when detecting the fingerprint. It doesn’t matter if you are more or less inclined, since the sensor is able to recognize the finger that we have previously registered within the operating system.

On the other hand, the fingerprint that we saved on our iPhone was not available to everyone. This was encrypted inside the terminal itself, that is, the iPhone 5S, to such an extent that it was never sent to Apple’s servers.

Will it be on iPhone 15?

Rumors about the iPhone 15, Apple’s next big terminal, continue to emerge. This is totally logical and normal, especially at this time of year and considering that the iPhone 14 has not sold particularly well. In other words: we are eager to see the new smartphone to see what it incorporates … and if among it is Touch ID.

According to the information that is known, everything points to the fact that Touch ID will not be present in this iPhone 15. For some models, the company is betting on Face ID to unlock the terminal and perform certain actions, i.e. that it is the facial recognition that does the job, instead of the fingerprint.

Why does this happen? The explanation is simple, actually. Apple has always opted for its most meticulous and groundbreaking designs, hence when betting on the full screen by removing the button… it also dispensed with Touch ID. The way to implement it would be under the screen, something that can lead to headaches and, above all, increased costs. Instead, it introduced facial recognition.
