SimCity, the controversial always-online game is getting an expansion pack in November called ‘Cities of Tomorrow.’ Watch the trailer below.

The expansion will let you build futuristic cities, but won’t increase the city size, as many players wanted after the game’s launch in March. What is getting bigger in SimCity: Cities of Tomorrow are skyscrapers. Your futuristic towers will be three times higher than anything in the original game, making SimCity look like a friendly version of Judge Dredd’s Mega-City One.

SimCity has been beset with problems. Many features were disabled after launch due to server problems, and were brought back very gradually. The AI of the game has been severely criticized, with traffic especially proving to be remarkably stupid sometimes. The limits on city size mean you can’t build a megalopolis, as previous SimCity games allowed, which is disappointing in such a good looking game.

The mac version also encountered launch problems, and the experience of releasing an ‘always online’ game like this seemed to influence the development of the upcoming Sims 4. There will be no always online in that game, and the focus on multiplayer has been downplayed. It seems EA has learnt that while multiplayer is cool, lots of people still want to play by themselves.
