FreedomPop is a unique mobile phone operators. For phone calls, they use both traditional cellular voice, as well as VoIP (Voice over Internet Protocol). Most phone calls will go through the normal cellular network unless you’re in an area with poor coverage, in which case your phone will attempt a VoIP call. VoIP is cheaper than transmitting over the cellular network and is one of the reasons FreedomPop can offer a free service, but it does mean you need to go through the app to make or receive calls.
