For some time, the original creators of Instagram had been preparing a new app called Artifact. This app, launched in February, was intended to be a “personalized news feed powered by the latest in artificial intelligence,” combining news and AI to create something akin to TikTok‘s “For You” feed, with news personalized for each user based on their tastes.

Now, Artifact has launched a new social discussion feature, moving away from its TikTok inspiration and going in a different direction. Its new inspiration? Reddit, the Internet’s big forum site (which has also recently been inspired by TikTok’s feed).

According to TechCrunch, the new social discussion feature allows users to comment on and participate in conversations about articles that can be read on Artifact. In the same way as in a conventional forum, users will have to create a profile on the service before commenting on articles. In order to prevent the spread of fake accounts and spam, the platform asks users to add and verify their phone numbers.

Following the Reddit model, Artifact has created a reputation system whereby each user has a score (“karma” in Reddit), which can increase or decrease according to the positive or negative votes of other users. Next to the users’ names (which may be real names or nicknames) a number will appear representing their reputation, based on the ratings of their comments.

This user score, far from serving as a mere popularity system, will be taken into account for the social network’s algorithm to detect problematic content, either automatically or after a manual report, also weighing other data, such as the voting of a specific comment.

This, combined with the use of artificial intelligence, will allow it to effectively review whether users are complying with community guidelines and terms of service, according to Artifact. In the event that the user is found to have violated the regulations, their comment will be removed, and their profile could be suspended if they violate any of its stricter regulations or reoffend on further occasions.
