The Windows 8.1 update has improved the operating system in many ways, but gamers are warning against the update, due to mouse lag which makes many games unplayable.

A Reddit post explains the problem. Windows 8.1 introduced some changes to how it reads mouse movement, and this has meant some games no longer work well with a mouse. The bug affects games that don’t use Raw Input (or DirectInput) for reading the mouse. Deus Ex: Human Revolution, STALKER and Call of Duty are some titles that are affected.

Mouse and keyboard control is one of the biggest draws for PC gaming, so for it to be at least partly broken in the latest version of Windows is a serious problem.

Microsoft have not commented so far on the bug, so we can’t say when it will be fixed. Redditors have posted some work-arounds to improving mouse control in Windows 8.1, but they are not perfect solutions and are relatively complex.

The best advice to PC gamers thinking about upgrading to Windows 8.1 is to wait until the issue has been fixed by Microsoft.
