Gears of War: E-Day returns: Xbox shows off a darker Unreal Engine 5 rebuild

The Coalition showed Gears of War: E-Day again today, and this new look leans hard into a darker Unreal Engine 5 rebuild that already comes across as one of Xbox’s biggest swings.

The studio says Gears of War: E-Day was made natively in Unreal Engine 5 from the ground up, with no legacy code and no recycled art assets. The target, it says, is environmental and character detail at more than 100 times what Gears 5 pulled off, using Nanite for denser geometry and MegaLights for hundreds of dynamic lights that cast shadows, while still aiming for 60fps on Xbox Series X.

You’re also getting a prequel set 14 years before the first game. Gears of War: E-Day follows younger versions of Marcus Fenix and Dom Santiago across three days in Kalona during Emergence Day, with a darker, more grounded tone that lands closer to the original trilogy. The Coalition says movement and combat were rebuilt from scratch too, with jumping and cover on lower objects opening up more verticality and flexibility without losing Gears’ trademark stop-and-pop feel.

If you’ve been waiting for Gears to make a real technical jump, this looks like the one to keep an eye on.

Xbox says you’ll be able to see a playable campaign demo at Gamescom 2026, join the multiplayer beta on August 6, 2026 if you pre-order, and pick up the full game on October 6, 2026 for PC and Xbox Series X|S.
