Gemini on Wear OS starts rolling out: Google brings a new watch interface

Google has started pushing its Gemini AI assistant to Wear OS, and some Pixel Watch 4 owners are already seeing the redesigned version arrive through the Google Play Store as part of Wear OS 7.

On the watch itself, Gemini no longer takes over the whole screen when you open it. It now shows up as an overlay on top of your watch face or whatever app you’re using, with Google’s Neural Expressive look, the familiar background, the spark icon, and a greeting. Spoken requests also get live transcripts, and you’ll see confirmations when a task is done, which makes the whole thing quicker, clearer, and easier to follow on a small screen.

If you use Gemini on your watch, this is a pretty relevant update to install. It lines up with Google’s shift away from Google Assistant, which the company says will disappear from Android and Wear OS on September 4, 2026. It also makes Gemini feel more unified across a user base that, according to Google, hit 900 million monthly active users in May 2026.

Wear OS 7 brings battery improvements too, at least according to Google, along with Gemini tools that let people create custom watch face widgets using natural language. Early reaction hasn’t been all one way, though. Some people like the smoother presentation, while others are running into bugs, uneven app behavior, and smart home controls that still don’t match what Google Assistant could do in a smartwatch market that’s already crowded.
