All indications are that Apple‘s next revolutionary product will go from being in your pockets to your head. The heavily rumored mixed reality headset has been the subject of conversation for years, but we are still not quite sure when we will see it. For Apple, however, it’s no small matter: famed analyst Ming Chi Kuo said back in 2021 that the company’s goal is to “replace the iPhone with augmented reality in 10 years.” Will it succeed?

What do we know so far about the mixed reality helmet?

With Apple’s WWDC 2023 (the developer conference) just weeks away, we already know some of the things that will be presented. One of them is iOS 17, coupled with Apple’s mixed reality headset. Rumors aside, the company itself has already registered the name of an operating system that could be used in these helmets: xrOS.

The truth is that we have known about this name for a long time, but this is the confirmation of its existence.

The registration of this name has been carried out in New Zealand under another entity known as Deep Dive LLC. Although at first glance the relationship with Cupertino would appear to be non-existent, everything indicates that this is a ploy by Apple. This is not the first time the company has registered names and trademarks under other fictitious companies to avoid leaving a mark.

Although the headset is not scheduled to see stores until later this year, Mark Gurman has already detailed some of the functions and features we are likely to see in Apple‘s future headset. For starters, Gurman indicates that we’ll see the same apps pre-installed on the iPhone but in its mixed reality version: Calendar, FaceTime, Camera, GarageBand, Photos, Safari… the list is long.

Gurman’s report also talks about the fact that these applications will have certain new features to make special use of the helmet. For example, it has already been mentioned that we will be able to watch videos inside a “virtual theater” and the availability of virtual scenarios (such as a desert or the moon).

Apple has not forgotten the gaming sector either. Gurman explains that, precisely, this would be one of the main focuses of the mixed reality helmet. Not at all unusual seeing how its biggest competitor (Meta) has done particularly well through this route.

And you, what do you expect from Apple’s mixed reality headset?
