Gmail is adding more quick action buttons to your inbox, to make it quicker to interact with certain emails. You will be able to open Dropbox folders, Google Docs or watch YouTube videos in your mails without opening them.

Quick action buttons were introduced in May this year, allowing you to easily reply to invitations or rate a restaurant you booked via services like Seamless. The Official Gmail Blog announced the expansion of quick action buttons to include Dropbox, Google Docs, OpenTable, YouTube and Vimeo videos.

Gmail gets more ‘quick action’ buttons

It’s up to developers to add quick action buttons to their mails. You can find out how here. Briefly, you have to add a snippet of code to an email to make an action button appear. There are ‘in-app’ actions, such as RSVPs and reviews, which the reader can do from within Gmail, and ‘Go-To’ actions where the quick action button takes the user directly to another page, such as online check-in for flights.

While the buttons make interaction easier, they may also make it less likely that the recipient opens and reads the mail.

Currently Quick Action buttons have still not been rolled out to all users, so don’t be too disappointed if you don’t see one the next time someone shares a Dropbox folder with you!
