Gmail will end external-address sending in 2027: Yahoo, Outlook, and more

Google says Gmail will stop supporting the third-party “Send mail as” feature in January 2027. Once that happens, Gmail users won’t be able to send messages from Yahoo Mail, Microsoft Outlook, or many custom-domain addresses through Gmail, whether they’re using the web version or the app.

For years, “Send mail as” has been the feature that let people handle multiple identities from a single inbox. Sending from other Gmail addresses or Google Workspace aliases will still work. But support for non-Google accounts is going away. Google says it takes too much upkeep and that cutting it will help keep Gmail more secure and simpler to use.

Google is also shutting down Gmailify, its tool for linking outside accounts to Gmail, along with Gmail’s web POP3 fetching for external accounts. So Gmail is about to do less of what made it useful as a central inbox for other email services.

If you use Gmail for personal mail, work, family accounts, or a small organization, this change lands differently depending on how you use it.

The alternatives Google points to, including the Gmail mobile app for third-party access, Microsoft Outlook or Mozilla Thunderbird, forwarding, or moving a custom domain to Google Workspace, aren’t as convenient. Some can be flaky or run into spam filters. Others add a monthly cost. Casual users may barely notice any of this. People who’ve relied on Gmail for years as the place where everything comes together are losing one of its handiest tools.

Gmail itself isn’t going anywhere. It still works on the web, Android, and iOS.
