Google launches Android Digital Credential Alliance: wider digital ID support

Google said today that it’s launching the Android Digital Credential Alliance, an expansion of its 2021 Android Ready SE program meant to make digital IDs, including driver’s licenses and national ID cards, work more securely across Android devices and services.

The group goes past chip makers. Google says it also brings in phone manufacturers, wallet developers, and government agencies, all aiming at a shared standard for issuing, storing, and verifying credentials. On supported phones, Android Strongbox keeps that data in a protected area and only releases it after you authenticate with a fingerprint, face unlock, or PIN.

Google says this is the same security model already used by Google Wallet, and it pointed to that setup as a reference for the European Digital Identity Wallet expected by the end of 2026. Mobile driver’s licenses are already expanding into more U.S. states and some TSA PreCheck checkpoints, Google says, though you’ll still need a physical ID as backup.

If broader digital ID support on Android matters to you, this is one to watch. The American Civil Liberties Union and the Electronic Frontier Foundation are still warning about surveillance, tracking, function creep, malware, and weak implementations.
