Google Maps adds a speedometer to Android Auto: showing up in beta
Some beta users also see posted speed limits on-screen

Google Maps on Android Auto now has a built-in speedometer, so your current speed can show up on the infotainment screen while you’re navigating.
Right now, the feature seems to be appearing for some beta users on version 26.29.02.946673643. Reports so far have come from Canada and India. Still, you may not have it yet. This looks tied to a server-side rollout, and Google hasn’t said when it plans to make it available more broadly.
It shows up in both full-screen Google Maps and Android Auto‘s Coolwalk split view. If you’ve got a route running, you’ll see your current speed along with the posted speed limit. If you’re not actively navigating, you’ll only see your speed.
If you use Google Maps in the car all the time, this is probably worth installing, even if it arrives a bit late. Android phones have had speed readouts in Google Maps for years, and Google added the same feature to Apple CarPlay back in July 2024. GPS can also be more accurate than a car’s speedometer when tire wear or wheel-size changes throw the reading off. But it’s not perfect either, and accuracy can drop in tunnels, dense city streets, or anywhere the signal gets weak.
At the moment, the only way to get it is through the Google Maps beta on Android Auto. For now, it’s best to think of this as a limited beta release, not a full global launch.
