Google Maps will finally take advantage of Live Activities in iOS 16

Google is expanding the availability of augmented reality features in its Maps application. In addition, it has also added visible directions on lock screens on both Android and iOS devices.

This function allows you to see through the lock screen the estimated times of arrival, updated and with constant indications. On Android, Google Maps will make use of the usual notifications that we can find in the system, while on iOS the Live Activities function will be used (first introduced in iOS 16) and with it, the Dynamic Island.

Previously, all this information (which will also appear on the route summary screen) was previously only visible if you unlocked the phone and opened the app to view it directly. In addition, Google Maps will automatically update your trip and reflect this in notifications.

On the other hand, the ability to search for transport stations, restaurants and other businesses within Google Maps Live View AR will arrive in Barcelona, Dublin and Madrid after its launch in London, Los Angeles, New York, Paris, San Francisco and Tokyo. The Live View function can be used from the same camera icon found in the search bar.

The indoor Live View feature will be very useful for finding your way around spaces such as airports, train stations and particularly large shopping malls. In addition, Immersive View is also available now, but only in London, Los Angeles, New York, San Francisco and Tokyo. Over the coming months, we will see the new feature available in Amsterdam, Dublin, Florence, Venice and many more cities.

Finally, Google Maps for Android Automotive will incorporate a “very fast” charging filter for electric vehicles (150 kilowatts or more), while search results will show on-site chargers, such as those in supermarkets. Navigation will also add charging stops for shorter journeys, and we will see these features implemented over the coming months.
