Google will begin removing Google Assistant from Android on September 4. The company has started emailing users before the rollout, which is expected to take several weeks and won’t happen everywhere at once. Timing will differ by device, country, and language. The shift is part of Google’s broader plan to swap Google Assistant for Gemini on Android, and once an Android phone or tablet has been moved over, reports say there won’t be a way to switch back. The larger mobile phaseout is expected to keep going through March 2026.

The change is also expected to reach Android tablets, Wear OS watches, headphones, and Android Auto when Android Auto is being projected from a phone. Cars with Google built-in appear to be staying on Google Assistant for now, so people shouldn’t expect this to land in the same way, or on the same schedule, across every device.
