GTA 6 gets a November 19, 2026 release date: it won’t save or break gaming

Rockstar Games has locked in Grand Theft Auto VI for November 19, 2026 on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S. Some projections are already huge: 40 million copies sold, and somewhere between $3 billion and $4 billion in revenue on day one alone.

It’s also likely to throw the wider release calendar off balance. Other publishers are expected to get out of the way, which could leave the 2026 holiday lineup looking strangely light. EA has suggested Battlefield could move, Microsoft has already pushed Fable into early 2027, and some forecasts go as high as $6 billion in first-year revenue. A launch that big would probably give PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S sales another lift too.

If you’re into big open-world console games, this will probably be an easy buy. What it won’t do is fix an industry that’s still stuck with layoffs, studio shutdowns, AAA budgets that now run past $200 million, and GTA VI cost estimates ranging from $1 billion to $1.5 billion.

There could be some spillover. Ubisoft CEO Yves Guillemot has argued that giant releases can pull players back into the market. But there are other things to watch for too: a boxed edition that only includes a download code, no disc; a bigger push on Grand Theft Auto VI Online monetization, especially after Take-Two said 78.1% of its fiscal 2026 net revenue came from recurring spending; and the copycat pressure former PlayStation executive Shawn Layden has warned about, where everyone chases the same kind of blockbuster and smaller bets get squeezed out.

You’ll be able to get Grand Theft Auto VI on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S on November 19, 2026.
