Rockstar Games has finally let one concrete detail slip about Grand Theft Auto 6, and it’s a big one. Rob Nelson, who heads development at the studio, has now given a clearer idea of the size of the map, with YouTuber TGG saying it’s roughly twice as large as Grand Theft Auto 5’s. People have spent months guessing how big Grand Theft Auto 6 would be, especially since Rockstar’s worlds haven’t simply grown with every release. Red Dead Redemption 2, for example, doesn’t have a bigger map than Grand Theft Auto 5. Still, this time it really does sound like Rockstar is going for sheer scale.
A gigantic map
During a conversation with YouTuber TGG, Rockstar development head Rob Nelson shared a better sense of how large Grand Theft Auto 6’s take on Vice City and Leonida actually is. According to TGG, “the map is twice the size of the GTA 5 map, three times the size of the Red Dead 2 map. Vice City itself is twice the size of Los Santos, and Vice City and its surrounding areas are 11 times larger than Los Santos and its surrounding areas”**.
Honestly, that’s a little unsettling, because even those numbers still don’t seem to account for the full map. Rockstar Games has already confirmed six locations: Vice City, Port Gellhorn, the Leonida Keys archipelago, the Grassrivers swamps, Mount Kalaga National Park, and Ambrosia.
How Rockstar is going to fit all of that into a single map, we still don’t know. But if the whole thing really is twice the size of the Grand Theft Auto 5 map, space clearly wasn’t a problem. What we’re looking at, then, is a game that’s crammed with things to do and absolutely massive. Which is pretty much what fans have been hoping for all along.**
