Grand Theft Auto V has been teased to no end by developer Rockstar Games but we haven’t seen any news about the mutliplayer aspect of the game. Today, Rockstar released a three minute long trailer showing off Grand Theft Auto Online. Here’s what you need to know.

GTA Online will debut a few weeks after the launch of Grand Theft Auto V and will be free to play for owners of the game. Rockstar has not elaborated whether or not GTA Online will be free to play to everyone, or just owners of GTA V. According to Rockstar’s trailer, the world of Los Santos in GTA Online will be a “persistent online world,” which means it will continue to evolve after its launch with content from both Rockstars and the GTA community.

There will be tons of character customizations, similar to previous Rockstar online games like Red Dead Redemption. The trailer shows off the ability to purchase houses, a huge garage, and a myriad of vehicles. There will be “structured and unstructured play,” meaning you will have set objectives but can freely roam the world and find things to do on your own. Rockstar also showed of the ability to start a “crew” with your friends to complete missions together.

Some of the missions highlighted in the trailer include heists, robberies, and traditional multiplayer modes like deathmatch. There seems to be other leisurely activities like arm wrestling and golfing. Perhaps your cousin can ask you to go bowling too.

Grand Theft Auto V will be released on September 17th for the Xbox and Playstation 3. There’s still no word from Rockstar if the game will make it to PC.

UPDATE: CVG has spoken with Leslie Benzies, Rockstar North president, about whether GTA Online would be part of GTA V. “It’ll be GTA Online; it’s not part of GTA 5. Obviously it’s set in the GTA 5 engine, but it’s going to grow and evolve into its own thing,” says Leslie. Still, the only way you can get GTA Online is by buying GTA V, since the company currently has no plans to sell it as a separate product.

Additionally, it was revealed that the multiplayer mode would be accessed from within GTA V via a 4th character on the character wheel. We speculated that the 4th character on the wheel could be for the mutliplayer mode and now it has been confirmed.
