Has The Lord of the Rings gone out of style? The failure of The War of the Rohirrim raises alarms

This year, we have finally been able to enjoy the return to theaters of one of the most beloved franchises in film history: The Lord of the Rings. The animated movie The War of the Rohirrim premiered last December 5th, with the intention of being a blockbuster that would revitalize the franchise.

However, the results could not be further from reality. The film has barely grossed just over 10 million dollars since its international release, and although it only cost 30 million, for now it seems that Warner Bros is not even going to recover the investment.

A declining franchise

According to Discussing Film, Warner attributes the failure to “the film was rushed to ensure that New Line Cinema did not lose the rights to adapt Tolkien’s novels into films.” However, this strain adds to that of the series The Rings of Power and may impact the future The Hunt for Gollum, scheduled for 2026.
