HBO’s Lanterns is now James Gunn’s biggest DC IMDb breakout

HBO’s Lanterns, the Green Lantern drama set in James Gunn and Peter Safran’s rebooted DC Universe, has hit a new high on IMDb’s popularity rankings before a trailer has even dropped. It’s currently the top-performing announced DCU title on the platform, which means that by IMDb’s own measure, the series is drawing more attention than any other Gunn-era project so far, even if that kind of popularity doesn’t map directly to ratings or box office.

The show pairs Hal Jordan and John Stewart in a grounded mystery, not a giant cosmic effects show, and that HBO-style prestige angle, along with the cast and the people making it, seems to be pulling in both longtime DC readers and more casual viewers while the larger DCU is still being tested beyond Superman.

Anyone following DC’s reboot closely should keep an eye on this. Lanterns already feels like it could end up as one of the franchise’s main TV pillars, and if that early interest turns into strong reviews and real audience turnout, it may also show how James Gunn and Peter Safran want to build this new universe outside the movies.

Lanterns is coming to HBO.
