He was the first great influencer in history. Now they’ve just taken him to the hospital after he got hurt during a live stream.

Before the word “influencer” existed, Perez Hilton was already on the Internet. It was 2005, and his blog covered every kind of celebrity gossip that reached him thanks to the photos his followers sent him. His face became world-famous when he was under 30, and little by little he became closer and closer to the celebrities he wrote about, causing distrust among his followers, until new technologies gradually eroded his influence… until now, when he’s reached his lowest point.

Yesterday, Perez Hilton, now turned into one of those second-rate celebrities he used to fixate on in his early days, went live yesterday on TikTok that set off alarm bells for his fans. In it he appeared bloodied and cutting himself with a knife. The police ended up going to his family home, where they said he’d spent the whole night holed up in his room. Luckily it didn’t go any further, and they took him to the hospital, where he’s recovering.

Clearly out of it and babbling things like “Fuck you, TikTok” and ranting about the algorithm, Hilton has recovered, even if only momentarily, his lost fame. In fact, he ended up apologizing for what happened, in what many have seen as a chance to get attention and others as a chance to move closer to Christianity (he’s already a believer, and in fact some of his merchandise revolves around his beliefs), because, in the end, everyone has their own agenda on the Internet.

At the moment, Hilton was still living off his fame through appearances on TV shows, his podcast and his Patreon, with nearly a million followers on Instagram. How this downward spiral is going to affect him is something that, I’m afraid, we still can’t even foresee. One thing is clear: the story is still far from over.
