Blizzard used BlizzCon 2026 to give Heroes of the Storm its clearest sign of life in years. The MOBA is getting Xal’atath, regular patches, and what sounds like an actual long-term plan instead of one-off maintenance.
Xal’atath comes over from World of Warcraft and becomes the first new hero since Hogger arrived in December 2020. She hits the public test realm on September 14, 2026, with the full release set for September 28. Blizzard is openly tying that return to the game’s long quiet stretch: the 2018 scale-back, the halt on new heroes after 2020, and the maintenance-mode label it got in July 2022.
That gap starts to make more sense once you hear how the team describes it. Heroes of the Storm lead producer James Yen first joined Blizzard in 2015, came back in 2022, and says the team had to rebuild infrastructure, tools, and the game’s technical foundation around a smaller staff before players would see much of anything. Visible fixes and roughly monthly patches started up again in September 2023. From there, the work moved past stability and into balance tuning. Blizzard is still being careful about what it promises after community trust took a hit, but it has already started teasing another hero.
If you still play Heroes of the Storm on a regular basis, this comeback looks like one to keep an eye on, especially since the fan reaction has been upbeat. Even the disputed third-party estimates from late 2024 into early 2025 had monthly players sitting near 3.3 million.
Heroes of the Storm is available on PC through Blizzard. Xal’atath goes live on the PTR on September 14, then joins the live game on September 28.
