House of the Dragon’s Lucerys change: how it could reshape the war
The show makes Lucerys’ death an accident, not murder

House of the Dragon is back in the middle of the argument, this time over how the Season 1 finale handled Lucerys Velaryon’s death. One quick clarification before anything else: HBO’s prequel has aired only two seasons so far, so this didn’t come from a Season 3 ending. It happened at the end of Season 1, when Aemond Targaryen and Vhagar chased Lucerys from Storm’s End, and Vhagar killed Lucerys and his dragon, Arrax.
In George R.R. Martin’s Fire & Blood, Aemond means to do it. It’s a vicious act, and it marks him as one of the clearest villains of the Dance. The show handles it another way. Arrax attacks first, Vhagar reacts, and Aemond looks genuinely horrified, which turns a cold-blooded execution into a catastrophic loss of control.
If you’ve been following House of the Dragon, that change matters. It gives Aemond more moral ambiguity, divided fans and critics, and carries even more weight after a Season 2 finale that some viewers felt was more setup than payoff. Later choices can read less like pure evil and more like pride, insecurity, and the burden of living with a mistake, even if Rhaenyra Targaryen, Daemon Targaryen, and the Blacks still see murder. If the series keeps pressing that distinction, motivations and retaliation could start to shift as the war moves into its bloodiest chapters. You can stream both seasons of House of the Dragon on HBO and Max.
