How a Blizzard producer saved Overwatch from being an offensive title

In a recent interview with artificial intelligence researcher and podcaster Lex Fridman, Jeff Kaplan, former vice president of Blizzard and co-creator of Overwatch, revealed that the popular shooter was almost known as “Monetized Shooter”.

This controversial designation emerged in the early stages of game development, where Kaplan had conceived a free model that would require players to purchase heroes. However, Kaplan admitted that this idea was considered “terrible” by his team.

How Matt Hawley Saved Overwatch from a Fatal Name

Kaplan shared that, thanks to the intervention of Matt Hawley, one of the initial producers of Overwatch, the title changed drastically to “Overwatch”. Hawley opposed using a name that could be offensive to the team, suggesting instead a more appropriate title.

The name change not only represented an act of camaraderie towards his colleagues but also a subtle response to a Blizzard developer who had previously criticized the title of a canceled game called Titan.

Additionally, the head of Overwatch, in a recent statement, mentioned that other titles, particularly “Marvel Rivals,” have influenced the way Blizzard manages the introduction of new heroes. This inspiration has been key to improving how the title responds to the incorporation of new characters, which could be crucial for the future of the game.

Finally, video game fans have the opportunity to stay informed about Overwatch and other titles through various newsletters that offer weekly updates, industry analysis, and game recommendations. Among them, weekly newsletters stand out, covering everything from release news to detailed analyses, aimed at different types of players.
