How to master Fortnite’s Getaway Mode

Don’t Drop on the Safe

The Getaway centers on teams of heist crews trying to make off with one of four Crystal Llamas, locked in safes that are scattered around the Battle Royale map. The safes spawn in predictable locations, synced with the cardinal directions: north, south, east and west. These locations will be marked on everyone’s map in the opening moments of the game. Finding the safes isn’t hard. As a result, it can be tempting to immediately drop in on one of the safes. Doing so is an easy recipe for instant death.

In the opening moments of the battle, the areas around the safes are the most dangerous places to be. The vast majority of players will be dropping in and going directly for the safes, which means pure distilled chaos on a level that makes Tilted Towers look tame. Even the most skilled teams will have a tough time surviving this initial rush.

Instead of dropping directly into the fray, consider hanging back for a period. Drop in at alternate locations away from the safe spawn. This will give your team time to gather supplies, stock up on weapons, and make sure your shields are full without having to worry about staying alive. In the meantime, your opponents will be busy killing each other off. As the numbers dwindle and the initial rush subsides, your team will have the perfect opportunity to swoop in, take out any remaining survivors, and easily make off with the Crystal Llama.

Mine Often

Maybe even more so than in the base Battle Royale game, making sure you’re well stocked on supplies and building materials is essential to locking in a successful Getaway. Having materials on hand is especially essential at two key points in the game: breaking into the safe and making it to the getaway van.

When the Crystal Llamas first drop in, they’ll be locked in sturdy metal safes. Breaking into a safe takes time, and you’ll be exposed to any enemy teams that might be gunning for you as you do so. Throwing up barriers and defenses is essential for making sure your team doesn’t get picked off while you’re busting into the safe. Metal is a good material for this: it’s sturdy and can take a lot of punishment before breaking. A good practice is to throw up a few quick metal defensive walls for cover before starting to work on the safe.

The second key point where building materials will come in handy is in the rush to the getaway van. Like the safes, the getaway vans spawn in several locations around the map. The catch is that these aren’t ordinary vans. Like the Battle Bus, these vans are strapped to hot air balloons. This means they’ll often be found hovering high in the air or on mountain peaks that are otherwise inaccessible by foot. Imagine making off with the Llama and getting all the way to the getaway van only to discover you have no way to actually get to it.

Having a stockpile of wood on hand means you can throw up a quick and easy ramp to get to the van without even breaking a sweat. Any free moment in Getaway should be spent gathering resources. They’ll come in handy in more ways that you can count.

Support Your Team

Finally, and perhaps most importantly, Getaway is a team-based mode. All the standard rules of team play apply, and that means first and foremost communicating with your team. Try to use a mic if you have one, but if not, follow the rest of your team. Even if you don’t agree with their decisions, such as where to drop, you should still go along with it. Getaway is essentially impossible to win if you’re playing lone wolf. If the rest of your team goes down and you’re all by your lonesome, you’ll be easy prey for any other teams left alive.

Sticking with your team means you stand more of a chance if you get in a fight: being able to back each other up, provide supporting fire, and revive each other if you go down. Even if your team’s decisions seem counterintuitive, supporting them and sticking together will hugely increase your chances of survival. There’s a reason most high-class heists take a crew of professionals to pull off.

Ready to take the step up from petty theft to big-league crime? Keep these tips in mind the next time you go after the Llama and soon enough you’ll find that you and your crew are scoring big.

Alex's first experience with video games came at the tender young age of 12, when his parents gave him and his brothers a PlayStation 2 for Christmas. They’ve probably been regretting that mistake ever since, because as soon he finished his first lap in Gran Turismo 3, Alex was hooked for life. In addition to writing for Softonic, Alex has turned that love of games into a voice acting career, and has voiced everything from grizzled old soldiers to vampire lords. When he's not gaming or getting behind the microphone, Alex can probably be found wandering the woods around Boston or putting together some new culinary delight in his kitchen.
