How to remove objects and people from photos with AI in Photoshop

Adobe Photoshop is one of the most advanced photo editing programs available. And it is precisely its complexity that makes many users hesitant to choose it for simple edits. However, Photoshop has become more accessible than ever, especially with the arrival of generative AI.

Removing elements from an image is one of the most common edits. After all, filters cannot erase a person who appears at just the right moment, or prevent an object from being distracting in the frame. Below, you will see how you can remove anything from your photos using Photoshop.

Generative Fill, your ally in Photoshop

Leaving a clean photograph free of unwanted things couldn’t be easier since the arrival of Generative Fill. Now you will understand why.

Of course, we have to start with the obvious: open the image you want to edit in Photoshop. Then, select one of the many selection tools; all of them will work for you. It can be the Lasso Tool, Magic Wand, the rectangular selection tool, etc. Choose the one that best suits your needs based on the object you want to erase.

With our selection tool already chosen, it’s time to draw what we want to erase. With this method, you won’t need to make a perfect selection, but it will help you achieve better results.

When you make the selection, a small contextual menu will appear on the screen. If you don’t see it, go to Window > Contextual Task Bar to “activate” it. In that menu, you will see two options: Generative Fill and Remove.

Select Remove to delete the object. Wait for the action to be processed and you will see the result.

If, on the contrary, we select Generative Fill, a box will appear where we can describe what we want to generate in the selected portion of the image. Leave the space blank and select Generate. This will cause, just like with Remove, the object to be eliminated. However, Photoshop will give you three different results that you can observe from the Properties panel.

If you don’t like the results, you can click on Generate again to create new ones. Keep the one you like the most, and you’ll have your photo without that object or person that was in the way before.

Use Adobe Photoshop in its web version

Many do not know it, but Adobe has made some of the most striking and used features of its programs available to the public. In this case, if you access this link you will be able to upload your image to the web and delete the object from there.

Wait a moment while you are redirected to the web version of Photoshop. Just like with the PC or mobile version, don’t forget that you need to have an Adobe account to access the platform.

Go to the left toolbar and select the Retouch symbol, which will look like a band-aid. Click on Remove and paint over the element you want to erase. For better results, select Generative Fill and do the same as before: leave the box blank and click on Fill.

It is true that the PC version will give you better results, but you can always use the web version for easy and quick edits. It is also an ideal option if you are on another computer that is not your usual one and need to make basic edits.

Adobe Photoshop on your mobile

The Photoshop app for mobile (Android and iOS) is very comprehensive and also allows us to use generative AI to erase people or objects. To get started, open the image within the app. Tap on the + symbol and select Add from Photos.

Once here, make sure you are on the Tools tab and press Retouch. Select the Remove option and draw with your finger what you want to eliminate. Wait for the app to do the rest and observe the results. You can go back by pressing the arrow located at the top that points to the left.
