It’s a fact: artificial intelligence has completely revolutionized the current technological landscape, and Adobe didn’t want to be left behind. Adobe Illustrator, one of the company’s most popular creative programs alongside Photoshop, has recently introduced new AI-based features, and we can already tell you that they are quite interesting.
Which creative hasn’t wished at some point that Adobe Illustrator could “read” their mind and create graphics instantly? For now, that will remain science fiction, but Adobe has achieved something similar: Illustrator can transform a written description into vectors.
Which creative hasn’t dreamed that Adobe Illustrator could “read” their mind and create vector graphics instantly? Although that’s still science fiction, Adobe has achieved something quite similar: Illustrator can convert a description into vectors. The best part? You can try it out yourself.
Next, we’ll show you how to use this feature and much more so you can take advantage of artificial intelligence capabilities within Adobe Illustrator.
From text to vector graphic: Adobe Illustrator makes it that easy
Thanks to artificial intelligence, Adobe has integrated one of the most interesting and useful functions you can imagine into Illustrator: being able to “translate” a textual description into a vector graphic.
Through Adobe Firefly, we can generate vector graphics from scratch using only our words. Describe what you want to appear and what kind of motif or scene the program should generate. Based on your instructions, Illustrator will generate several options from which you can choose the one that best fits what you are looking for. The resulting graphics will appear in editable groups, so you can modify them at any time.
Moreover, you will see that it is an extremely simple and easy process. To generate your own graphics instantly, you only need to follow these steps:
- Select the Rectangle, Ellipse, Polygon, or Star tool. On the right, you will see a new submenu appear within Properties called Text to Vector Graphic (Beta). If you don’t see any menu, go to the top bar of Adobe Illustrator and click on Window. Then, click again on Text to Vector Graphic (Beta).

- Within Text to Vector Graphic, you will see four types of options: Subject, Scene, Icon, and Pattern. Each of them serves to generate a different style of graphic, as you will see below:
- Subject: creates a detailed vector drawing but without a background.
- Scene: creates a complete vector scene.
- Icon: similar to Subject, creates a detailed vector drawing but without a background, ideal for creating groups of logos.
- Pattern: fills a shape with a pattern that we have previously described.
- Once you have finished choosing an option, go to the Prompt box and describe the type of graphic you need to generate. It is important that you use direct and easy-to-understand language. Simple sentences are the key.

Illustrator also offers a pretty interesting option called Reference Asset. You will find it in Properties, within Styles. This tool will help the generated object mimic the style of the project you are working on. In Styles, you will see that there are two alternatives:
- Artwork: Ensures the style of the generated object matches the vector or flat image surrounding the selected illustration.
- Picker: Allows you to choose the style of any object in the illustration.
You can also adjust the intensity of the generation (between Minimal and Complex) in Settings, a section you will also find within Properties.
Create a pattern from scratch with the help of AI
Designing patterns in Adobe Illustrator becomes easier than ever thanks to artificial intelligence.
- In your project, first select the Direct Selection tool to choose where you want to apply your pattern.
- Go to Pattern, an option you will find within Text to Vector Graphic.
- As before, within Prompt you will need to write what type of pattern you want to obtain, its style, and how it would look. Remember to use simple and direct sentences: this is how you will get the best results.
When generating patterns, you have several options to further customize your designs, such as specifying colors or using Presets.

Generating replacement colors in Illustrator
Adobe Firefly technology will also help us change the tones of an illustration in a snap. No fuss, no hassle: just write down the colors your project should have and Adobe Illustrator will do the rest. This way, you can experiment with different variations in no time and see instantly how it would look. Try it yourself and put it into practice as follows:
- To change the colors, first select the object or illustration you want to alter. You can do this with the Selection tool.
- Go to the top bar and click on Edit. Then, select Edit Colors and Generative Recolor.

- In the Prompt box is where you will need to indicate which color palette or colors you want to use to replace the current ones. Within the same panel, you will find some suggestions under the Samples section that you can experiment with.
- Alternatively, just below the Prompt box, you will see a Color section where you can directly choose a combination of colors. Illustrator will generate a series of examples based on your choice.

How can I access Adobe Illustrator’s AI features?
Programs belonging to the Adobe suite, such as Adobe Illustrator or Adobe Photoshop, are only accessible through a paid subscription, either monthly or annually. Adobe allows you to choose between different plans so you can select the one that best suits your needs.
It’s worth remembering that Adobe offers a 7-day free trial redeemable only once, so use it wisely.
Both the color replacement option and the ability to generate a vector graphic from a description are included in Adobe Illustrator, except for users living in China. A stable Internet connection is also essential, especially if you want to take advantage of the benefits that artificial intelligence provides.
