Hugh Laurie goes out to defend House by comparing it to Bach and the blues

Although the years go by, Hugh Laurie remains one of the biggest defenders of Doctor House. One of his most well-known roles, if not the most well-known outside of England, has brought him much joy and apparently, he has a tremendous affection for it. That is why he has gone viral on X, the social network formerly known as Twitter, after responding to the unfair criticism made by a user about the series.

The independent journalist Janet Murray mocked the series claiming that the series follows a very simple and repetitive structure. “The patient has a mysterious illness. Hugh Laurie (House) gets the diagnosis wrong. The patient nearly dies. Hugh Laurie gets the diagnosis wrong again. He is threatened with being fired. The patient nearly dies again. Hugh Laurie has a brilliant idea at the last minute. He gets the correct diagnosis. He is not fired,” thus summarizing the series in a viral tweet.

So viral that it reached the ears of Hugh Laurie himself. The actor responded with irony, stating that “we tried a couple of episodes where House (Hugh Laurie) (please, put the parentheses in the right place) got it right on the first try, but they only lasted 6 minutes. NBC wasn’t happy.” He also emphasized that the method itself is the purpose of art “what’s important is, or was, the variations on a theme; if all you see is a hospital, blah blah blah medical, then it’s not made for you.”

Although Laurie has apologized for his response in a later tweet, stating that “I shouldn’t have quoted Bach/Kahlo/Moore —calling out the issues— and I could have done better by referencing the 10,000 blues songs written with around the same 12 chord structures,” the English actor is right about his analysis. And while his methods may not have been the most suitable for some people, his passion for the series and art in general is refreshing and charming.
