In 2024, NetEase boldly ventures into the live shooter genre with the launch of Marvel Rivals, taking a risky turn after the failure of its predecessor, Concord, which was canceled by PlayStation.

The team behind Marvel Rivals acknowledges the inherent challenges of live service games and the difficulty of ensuring success. According to Yachen Bian, head of publishing and marketing, there is a palpable panic when facing the harsh reality of a market filled with failed games.

They feared they might fail

To counter possible setbacks, the team implemented several strategies, such as accelerating the launch of new content and encouraging player community engagement through a creator program.

“The success of Marvel Rivals is due to emphasizing early testing, receiving feedback, and addressing the comments received,” says Danny Koo, executive producer. This proactive approach has allowed the community to get involved from the early stages of the game, generating conversation and anticipation before its release.

Despite the competitive landscape with the return of titles like Overwatch, the successful launch of Marvel Rivals stands out in a volatile market.

Although its future is uncertain, the team behind the game has managed to take a decisive step by presenting a playable product from the launch, an approach that reflects a valuable lesson for other developers in the industry.
