Instagram says users should control AI content: no off switch

Instagram laid out its approach to synthetic media today, and the bottom line is simple: the platform isn’t planning to broadly screen AI-generated posts out of your feed.

Adam Mosseri, who runs Instagram, says the app should show you less AI-made content if you don’t want it and more if you do. That keeps Meta, Instagram’s parent company, on the side of labeling generated media rather than blocking it outright, and it means there’s still no platform-wide switch to turn the whole category off.

Mosseri also says Instagram should let you know when a post was made with AI. But spotting that is getting harder, so the labels may get less black-and-white over time, with wording closer to “probably generated” when the system can’t say for sure.

Meta also seems to be exploring the other side of the problem: proving what’s real. That could mean authenticating photos and videos captured on a camera, not just attaching tags to synthetic ones.

The messy part is that Meta is still rolling out more in-app tools for making synthetic images, including features that let people tag other users. It’s doing that while also trying to rein in spam and facing warnings about harassment, fraud, abuse, exploitation, privacy, and the default use of public profile photos for training unless people opt out.

And if feed quality matters to you, there’s already some backlash. Creators are pushing back, and analysts citing a 2026 survey say 63% of consumers are less likely to engage, even as the argument over Instagram’s direction starts to look different from one region to another.
