Instagzam? This is what the new Instagram logo that’s confusing us all looks like

Instagram has just rolled out a new look. It hasn’t redesigned its logo, yet, but it has changed —completely and absolutely— its wordmark. After more than a decade with the previous version, the change undoubtedly catches the eye. A more modern, sharper and clearly recognizable design, that’s clear, although the choice of its typography is giving people plenty to talk about.

An Instagram that seems to say “Instagzam”

As Adam Mosseri explained on Threads, Instagram has updated its wordmark to give it a more modern look, while keeping the references to the original. The new typography uses the usual curves of cursive writing, especially in the s, the g and the r, and that’s where people are weighing in.

A second look makes it clear that we’re looking at Facebook‘s platform, but at a quick glance, many of us are reading “Instagzam.” For now, the wordmark change isn’t reflected in the icons, although the icons will likely change too at some point.

We’ve seen similar changes before, like Android‘s themed icons, but little else. The last major transformation was in 2016, when Instagram went from the classic camera with the brown border to the current icon with the candy-colored gradient.

While the platform is testing new controls to adjust the algorithm, and lets us choose whether we want anyone to be able to edit and change our images with AI, the Instagzam joke is getting plenty of laughs. After looking at it for a few seconds, it’s obviously Instagram, but in those first few seconds, “Instagzam” has its charm.
