Apple has rolled out a series of essential software updates for its vast ecosystem of devices. iOS 16.6, iPadOS 16.6, macOS Ventura 13.5, watchOS 9.6, and tvOS 16.6 have received crucial security enhancements, and it is highly recommended to install them as soon as possible.

16 security enhancements for new and legacy devices

While Apple has always been known for the security of its systems, no software is immune to potential risks. In this instance, the updates address 16 potential security vulnerabilities, of which two have been identified by Apple as possibly being actively exploited.

The kernel, also known as the core of these operating systems, has been the main focus of these corrections. One particular vulnerability could have allowed an application to alter a sensitive state of the kernel. According to Apple, there have been reports of active exploits against earlier versions of iOS, though it only affects versions before iOS 15.7.1. With this update, however, it is now closed for all platforms.

Another significant correction was applied to WebKit, the engine behind Safari. Apple stated that this vulnerability could have been actively exploited. In response, Apple released quick security updates, so devices that installed them were already protected in this specific area.

Moreover, today’s security updates are not limited to devices with the latest software version. Apple has once again demonstrated its commitment to security by also releasing iOS 15.7.8, iPadOS 15.7.8, macOS Monterey 12.6.8, and macOS Big Sur 11.7.9 for devices that cannot run the current versions. These updates, like the most recent ones, include the same 16 security improvements we’ve mentioned earlier.

As we have mentioned before, updates are not always about visible changes or alterations in the device’s functionality. Security is the primary reason to keep our devices updated at all times. While we await the arrival of iOS 17, a list of 16 improvements is more than enough reason to head to Settings > General > Software Update as soon as possible.
