Apple seems to be gearing up for an impressive overhaul of the entire iPad lineup in 2024. According to the renowned Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, and corroborated by other sources such as Bloomberg, the company has truly ambitious plans to update all existing iPad models, including a refreshed version of the 10.9-inch iPad Air and the introduction of a new 12.9-inch iPad Air.
A complete overhaul is expected throughout the coming year
The focus of this new wave of iPads seems to be on a significant improvement in their technical features. Kuo predicts that the new 12.9-inch iPad Air will feature an enhanced LCD screen using an oxide panel technology, which promises to improve screen performance compared to the current 10.9-inch iPad Air that uses an a-Si panel.
Apple launched (barely) a 14-inch iPad, although it didn’t come to fruition. However, it seems that now we will indeed reach a larger size in the Air family. This new model, though, will not incorporate the mini-LED technology present in the current iPad Pro models; the improvement in the screen will be a notable step forward. This refresh is expected to arrive during the first quarter of next year.
The next major update, focused on the second quarter of 2024, will be geared towards the iPad Pro models. These devices will receive not only a new chassis design but also the introduction of the M3 chip and, for the first time in an iPad, an OLED screen. This update promises to be a significant leap in terms of display quality and energy efficiency, surpassing even the current mini-LED displays.
Finally, in the second half of 2024, Apple plans to update the more affordable models in its lineup, with new versions of the iPad mini and the education-focused iPad, currently in its tenth generation. This update will also mean the discontinuation of the 9th generation iPad, which is still offered alongside the 10th generation model. These changes also include the complete transition from Lightning to USB-C ports in the iPad lineup.
While the foldable iPad is reportedly already in full development and expected to arrive sooner than anticipated, Apple seems to be gearing up for a comprehensive update to the iPad lineup in 2024, promising significant improvements in terms of hardware and design. With this, iPads are poised to continue impressing us with their capabilities.
