Apple is reportedly in the midst of developing the sixth generation of the iPad Air. This is affirmed by Mark Gurman in the latest edition of his weekly newsletter. While the release of this new model is still uncertain, rumors suggest that it will come with features that will rival those of the iPad Pro, leaving nothing to be desired.

Better specifications in an already very capable device

Gurman states that he doesn’t expect significant updates in the iPad lineup this year. What remains to be seen is whether the improvements in the specifications of the iPad Air are considered relevant in Apple’s eyes. That’s why it is unclear whether this iPad would be destined for a fall presentation, after the iPhone 15 and alongside the Macs with M3 chip, or if it would be saved for a spring event in 2024.

In any case, Gurman is clear in stating that “a new model of iPad Air with improved specifications is being developed,” although he does not provide further details. Looking at the calendar, the current iPad Air has not yet completed a year in the market. It was unveiled in March 2022 with an M1 chip and improvements to the front camera, bringing it dangerously close to the Pro model.

With improvements in specifications, we could expect the presence of M2 chips, primarily, but we might also see other enhancements in terms of battery life or internal components. Additionally, a redesign of the front could include moving the camera to the horizontal bezel, as seen in the tenth-generation iPad, enabling a centered image during horizontal video calls.

While it could be assumed that Apple was continuing the development of the iPad Air, its striking resemblance to the Pro model had raised some doubts in the past. Gurman’s statement is the first confirmation that the line is still evolving and that, as far as we know, we can expect a new iPad in our hands between this fall and the next spring.
