The much anticipated and rumored iPhone 15 has been the subject of numerous speculations and leaks in recent weeks. Now, thanks to some high quality CAD files obtained by 9to5Mac, we have a clearer idea of what this device will look like with the changes we expect. Changes that focus on the new action button and various camera tweaks.

Buttons: a more traditional design with a modern twist

Contrary to initial expectations about the use of haptic buttons on the iPhone 15 Pro, Apple appears to have opted for a more traditional button design with separate volume buttons. The main novelty in this design is the inclusion of a mute/action button that replaces the current switch after its inclusion on the first iPhone over 16 years ago.

While this is something that depends more on software than hardware, this mute button would add additional functionalities, as different presses can translate into different actions. An interesting reasoning that has joined the speculation that it could emulate the action button that was presented with the new Apple Watch Ultra.

It is worth noting, mind you, that this action button will only be present on the iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max line, while the iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Plus models will retain the mute switch with the existing design.

As we can see in the published renders, Apple has opted, always according to rumors, for a design in which the action button is somewhat smaller than the volume buttons. A resource so that, on the one hand, we can distinguish it from the others only by touch, and on the other, unwanted presses are avoided.

Camera improvements: more performance, less hype

Early CAD files of the iPhone 15 Pro showed a prominent camera bump with individual protrusions much larger than the camera bump of the current iPhone 14 Pro. While we might otherwise have doubted it, the rumored changes to the cameras’ internal components would make the gigantic change pass for good.

Now, however, updated CAD files reveal a much more reasonable design. While the camera protrusion is still larger this year compared to what we have now on the iPhone 14 Pro and Pro Max, the bumps are less exaggerated.

Based on the renders, we also expect the iPhone 15 Pro Max to feature a slightly larger camera protrusion, which backs up rumors of the inclusion of a periscope zoom lens. Something not expected from the iPhone 15 Pro, which being smaller and with a smaller lens layout, would not incorporate this periscope zoom lens this year.

In addition to revealing the new button design and camera changes, these CAD files also corroborate design details present in previous CAD models. These include extremely narrow bezels, the presence of USB-C, and a much more rounded and reduced frame than the current iPhone 14 Pro and Pro Max series.

All in all, the iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max are shaping up to be game-changing devices by combining innovations in design, performance and functionality. With new details leaking out and the launch – or at least the start of mass production – approaching, the anticipation around this device continues to grow. We’ll be watching for news and updates on the iPhone 15 Pro, but all indications are that this year will be a big one for the iPhone.
