Rumors about the next generation of the iPhone continue unabated, and the latest wave of speculation suggests that Apple is poised to provide users with a significant leap in terms of storage capacity. According to several sources, the colossal figure of 2TB could be on the verge of landing in the Pro models of the iPhone 15, thus doubling the current maximum capacity available in the iPhone 14.

For years now, storage has become a crucial feature for many of us. Over time, heavier applications, the creation of high-definition content, and the need to store numerous files have led us to constantly seek ways to free up more storage space and also opt for iPhones with larger capacities. But, what’s the truth behind these rumors about the iPhone 15?

Is the iPhone 15 saying goodbye to 128 GB?

According to “yeux1122,” a news aggregator on the Korean blog Naver (via MacRumors), a source from a supplier has confirmed that both the iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max will be available with double the maximum storage capacity compared to their predecessors, the iPhone 14 Pro and Pro Max. This claim is further supported by a report from MacRumors, which, through an account on Weibo, backs up this information and also suggests that the Pro models could be launched with a base storage of 256GB instead of the current 128GB of the iPhone 14.

This decision by Apple would be logical, as it would allow the company to maintain four levels of storage available: 256GB, 512GB, 1TB, and 2TB. If these changes are confirmed, it would not only represent a step forward in terms of maximum capacity but also provide an option for many users to start with 256GB without having to upgrade storage to accommodate their content.

Why this increase in storage?

One of the triggers for this increase could be linked to the advanced capabilities of the iPhone’s camera. Let’s remember that Apple first introduced a 1TB storage option for the iPhone 13 Pro and iPhone 13 Pro Max in 2021, mainly due to new camera features like ProRes video recording. This video format consumes significantly more storage than regular videos.

In fact, to record ProRes video in 4K resolution at 30 fps, an iPhone 14 Pro with storage capacities of 256GB, 512GB, or 1TB is required. ProRes video recording is limited to 1080p at 30 fps on 128GB iPhone 14 Pro or Pro Max models. With this change, all models would be capable of recording ProRes 4K at 30 fps.

The remaining question to be seen here is the matter of pricing. Two notable figures in the tech industry, Bloomberg journalist Mark Gurman and analyst Jeff Pu, have mentioned that they expect price increases for this year’s Pro models. Pu goes further and estimates that the iPhone 15 Pro could have a starting price of $1,099, an increase of $100 from the $999 of the iPhone 14 Pro.

The rumors are, at this point, speculations. However, if confirmed, these changes would represent a quite substantial improvement of the iPhone 15 compared to previous models. Apple has been steadily improving the base storage of iPhones, which initially started at only 4GB with the original iPhone. Now, with the anticipated camera enhancements, it’s an excellent time to make a qualitative leap in storage and, in the process, make the Pro lineup even more appealing compared to the entry-level range. We’ll know for sure in just over a month.
