As autumn approaches, the excitement grows for Apple’s next big announcement: the new iPhone 16 series. Scheduled for next September, we expect four models: iPhone 16, iPhone 16 Plus, iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro Max. We also expect many changes and improvements, some exclusive to the most professional models and others ready to make the entire range one of the most interesting in recent years.
What do we expect from the iPhone 16 and the iPhone 16 Plus?
Let’s start with the entry models to the ecosystem. The iPhone 16 and 16 Plus will have one of the biggest updates for non-Pro models. Battery, cameras, new buttons, more memory and much more.
A new camera design
Both the iPhone 16 and the 16 Plus will feature a new design with vertical cameras. A change that is not just aesthetic, but mainly focuses on the possibility of recording spatial videos with our iPhone. Videos that until now were only available on iPhones with the Pro and Vision Pro suffix and that will now be available on all phones of this 2024.
A dedicated capture button
This year’s iPhones will incorporate a capture button that will make it easier for us to take photos and videos. It will allow us to perform actions such as zooming and focusing more quickly and conveniently, simply by sliding our finger over the button. A press will focus and a slightly stronger one will take the photo or video.
Improvements in Wi-Fi connectivity
Although they don’t reach the level of the Pro models, the iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Plus will support Wi-Fi 6E, offering us faster and more efficient connection speeds thanks to the 6 GHz network on which this new standard operates.
From 6 to 8 GB of RAM
In the iPhone 16 without the Pro name, we will see, according to rumors, an increase in RAM, going from 6GB to 8GB, which promises significant improvements in multitasking performance and the ability to run demanding applications without compromising speed. In addition, this will make these phones compatible with Apple Intelligence.
A18 Chip for the best possible performance
We hope that all the iPhone 16 models this year come with the A18. A chip manufactured using TSMC’s second-generation 3nm process, known as N3E. Rumors indicate that Apple could differentiate between standard models and Pro models, possibly assigning different names and powers to the chips, such as A18 and A18 Pro.
Beyond this possible differentiation, this is the second element, along with the RAM memory we saw earlier, that will enable the arrival of Apple Intelligence to the entire range of iPhone 16.
More and less battery capacity
The iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Plus will see changes in the capacity of their batteries. While the iPhone 16, according to rumors, will enjoy a 6% increase in capacity compared to its predecessor, the iPhone 16 Plus will experience a 9% reduction. Changes that should not affect our day-to-day use of our iPhones too much, but show that we are facing an update with substantial changes.
News about the iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro Max models
The iPhone 16 Pro and 16 Pro Max will enjoy many of the new features that we have already listed. We will have the dedicated capture button, as well as a longer battery life (a 9% increase in the iPhone 16 Pro and a 5% increase in the iPhone 16 Pro Max). We will also have the A18 Pro chip. In addition to all this, we will have new exclusive features. The list is quite long:
Larger Screens
The iPhone 16 Pro is expected to have a 6.27-inch screen and the iPhone 16 Pro Max a 6.86-inch screen, being the largest so far for an iPhone. Let’s remember that the iPhone 15 Pro and Pro Max had diagonals of 6.1 and 6.7 inches, respectively.
Improvements in the ultra wide-angle camera
The Pro models will also feature an ultra-wide lens with 48 megapixels that will allow capturing more light, improving photos in low-light conditions, and enabling the capture of ProRAW photos with a 48-megapixel zoom at 0.5x.
Improvements in the telephoto camera
The iPhone 16 Pro Max could introduce a periscope camera with a telephoto lens that would provide significantly greater optical zoom, ideal for photography where we can’t get close. We would go from a 77mm zoom to a 300mm zoom, which roughly translates to 15x.
Reduction of reflections in lenses
To wrap up the photographic news, Apple is testing a new anti-reflective optical coating technology that will improve photo quality by reducing artifacts such as glare and ghosting.
Support for Wi-Fi 7 and improved modem
It is expected that the Pro models will support Wi-Fi 7, which would allow for faster speeds thanks to the simultaneous use of the 2.4, 5, and 6 GHz networks.
The Pro and Pro Max models will use, as far as we know, the latest Qualcomm modem, Snapdragon X75. A component that offers improvements in carrier aggregation and other technologies to achieve faster download and upload speeds through 5G.
40W Fast Charging and 20W MagSafe
Both Pro models should support 40W fast wired charging and 20W MagSafe charging. A substantial improvement compared to the current 27 and 15 watts we have right now.
Greater storage capacity
It is rumored that both Pro models will have an option of up to 2TB of storage, double the current maximum capacity of 1TB, thanks to the use of four-cell NAND technology.
Improvements in the Neural Engine
These models would also come with significant improvements in the iPhone’s artificial intelligence processor. Very welcome improvements now that we already have Apple Intelligence among us.
New thermal design
It is expected that the Pro models will incorporate a new graphene-based thermal system and possibly metal casings for the batteries to increase their heat tolerance and contribute to passive heat dissipation.
New polished titanium finish
With these improvements, the new iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Pro are positioned as the best iPhones in their history and as a quite substantial improvement over the current models. Improvements in all hardware, better support for even more capable software, and small details in almost every component will make these iPhones a true gem.
