iPhone Ultra may launch in 2026: foldable could miss key iPhone 18 Pro features

Current reporting points to Apple introducing its foldable iPhone in September 2026, with the device expected to arrive as an iPhone Ultra alongside the iPhone 18 Pro.

The pitch, at least from what’s being reported now, is a foldable iPhone built around a premium display, higher-end materials, and a fresh form factor. The compromises may be just as real. You could be looking at a dual-camera system rather than the iPhone 18 Pro’s triple-lens setup, possible changes to MagSafe or even its removal, and a price somewhere around $2,199 to $2,400, if not higher. Analysts also tend to frame Apple’s foldable iPhone as more of a luxury halo product than a mainstream iPhone, with Apple reportedly putting iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone Ultra production first and possibly pushing the standard iPhone 18 models into the first half of 2027.

So if your priority is Apple’s best zoom, imaging, and the most fully loaded hardware, the iPhone 18 Pro may still be the smarter buy. That could remain true even if Apple’s foldable iPhone, based on current reports and analyst expectations, ends up offering better app layouts in both folded and unfolded modes, stronger multitasking, more tablet-like multi-window use, and maybe even helps drive a 14 million unit lift in Apple’s fiscal 2027, despite higher costs, pressure on margins, and some real branding risk.

And if the foldable iPhone does launch on the timeline currently being reported, don’t expect easy availability. Supply will probably be tight, somewhere around 10 million units in 2026, with fast sellouts, a US-first rollout, and other markets waiting longer.
