Is it possible to play Dungeons and Dragons in space? A SpaceX mission has answered our questions

Rabea Rogge made history by becoming the first German woman to travel to space, participating in SpaceX’s Fram2 mission, a polar orbit flight funded by cryptocurrency billionaire Chun Wang.

During his journey, Rogge performed an intriguing demonstration on how to roll a twenty-sided die in zero gravity, which has captured the attention of the role-playing game enthusiast audience.

You can roll a 20-sided die in space

In a video shared on his social media, Rogge shows that the key to rolling dice in space is simple: roll one at a time. By catching the die in his fist and looking at the result through a small hole, he revealed that he had rolled a seven.

“So, unfortunately, I failed my wisdom roll and contracted space madness,” joked the astronaut, describing the experience of playing in space as “totally possible,” although with certain limitations in terms of cumulative rolls.

Although Rogge’s flight has been compared to a “gimmick” by Dr. Christopher Combs, associate to the dean of research at the University of Texas, he points out that this event symbolizes a significant, though not revolutionary, advance in private space exploration. “It has been a level above a trick, but not a historic milestone,” said the specialist.

At the same time, NASA’s Artemis 2 mission, which includes a flight around the Moon, has caused a notable increase in the number of concurrent players in the popular video game Kerbal Space Program, reaching a record high.

This growth has occurred despite technical issues related to the use of Microsoft Outlook. In this way, the intersection between space exploration and video game culture continues to generate interest and engagement in various communities.
